Why Does My Couch Smell Worse After Cleaning?

It is one of the most frustrating things that can happen: you clean the couch, or pay someone to, and a day later it smells worse than before. There are only a few reasons this happens, and each one has a clear fix.

Guide · Updated 2026

Reason 1: old urine has been reactivated

This is the most common cause by far. If a pet has ever had an accident on the couch, even months ago, dried uric acid crystals are sitting in the foam. They are close to odourless when completely dry. Add water, from a wet clean, an enzyme spray or a hire machine, and the crystals reactivate and release the smell again, often more strongly than you ever noticed before.

The giveaway is a sharp, ammonia-like or "cat box" smell that is strongest in particular areas rather than evenly across the couch. It often seems to spread after cleaning, because the moisture has carried the contamination outward through the padding. The fix is not another surface clean. It is an enzyme treatment applied deep enough to reach all of the affected foam, followed by strong extraction to pull it back out.

Reason 2: the couch stayed wet too long

A couch should be touch-dry within a few hours and fully dry within about six. If it stays damp for a day or more, because too much water went in, the extraction was weak, or the weather was cold and humid, the padding can start to smell musty or sour, like a towel left in a bag. Left long enough, mould can follow.

Reason 3: detergent left in the fabric

Too much shampoo, or a cleaner that was not rinsed and extracted out, leaves a sticky residue in the fibres. It can smell chemical or slightly sour, it attracts dirt so the couch re-soils quickly, and on some fabrics it feels stiff or crunchy. A low-residue rinse extraction removes it.

Reason 4: the smell was underneath all along

Sometimes a clean simply removes the surface layer that was masking a deeper smell, for example body oils, food or smoke soaked into the foam over years. Freshening the cover reveals what was in the padding. This usually fades as the couch dries fully, but if it persists, the source is in the foam and needs to be treated there.

Watch out for delicate fabrics

Natural and blended fabrics with viscose, linen or cotton, which are common in bouclé and textured weaves, can develop brown marks or rings if they are over-wetted and dry slowly. Combined with an odour problem, that is a sign the couch needs a low-moisture approach and a careful, targeted treatment rather than another full soak.

What to do next

Dry it first, then judge the smell. If an ammonia or urine smell is still there once the couch is completely dry, the contamination is in the foam and needs a professional enzyme treatment that reaches it. If it is musty and still damp after a day, it needs drying and possibly an anti-microbial treatment. Either way, we will tell you honestly on inspection what is causing it and whether it can be fully fixed. Pet urine and odour treatment is from $40 on top of the published couch price.

Common questions

People also ask

Is it normal for a couch to smell after cleaning?

A faint damp smell while it dries is normal and should be gone within a few hours. A strong urine smell, or a musty smell that lasts more than a day, is not. It means old urine was reactivated or the couch stayed wet too long.

Why does my couch smell like urine after I cleaned it?

Water reactivates the dried uric acid crystals left in the foam by an old pet accident, releasing the smell again. It needs an enzyme treatment that reaches the full depth of the contamination, not another surface clean.

How long should a couch take to dry after cleaning?

With proper extraction, most couches are touch-dry in a couple of hours and fully dry in three to six. If yours is still damp after 24 hours, get air moving and have it checked, as prolonged damp causes musty smells and can lead to mould.
