Mawson Lakes is a modern, master-planned suburb built around a chain of lakes, the University of South Australia campus and the technology park that sits beside it. The homes are newer than most of Adelaide — townhouses, apartments and contemporary family houses — and this is where we are based, so it is a suburb we know street by street.
Being a recent build, Mawson Lakes is dominated by contemporary furniture: fabric modulars and sectionals in open-plan living zones, a lot of it in the light greys and neutrals that suit a modern interior. These are synthetic-blend weaves for the most part, which take hot water extraction well. There is also a strong rental and student-share layer around the campus, where couches turn over with tenants and have to present well at the end of a lease.
Two things recur here. The light modern fabrics show everything — a pale grey modular in a bright, open room hides no mark, and owners are often surprised how quickly a new-looking couch starts to look grubby.
