Dog accidents on the couch usually come from puppies still learning, older dogs losing control, or an excited or anxious moment. The volume is bigger than a cat's, so it travels further into the cushion. Here is how to handle it, fresh or old.

Guide · Updated 2026
Dog urine is less concentrated than cat urine, so the smell is usually less sharp at first. The trouble is volume. A medium or large dog can release a lot of liquid in one go, and it does not stay on the surface: it runs through the cover, down into the seat foam, and often through to the platform or frame underneath. A stain the size of a hand on the fabric can be a wet patch the size of a dinner plate inside the cushion.
As it dries, the same uric acid crystals form that cause the lingering smell with cats. They reactivate with humidity, which is why a couch that seemed fine in winter can start to smell on the first warm, sticky day.
For a small puppy accident caught quickly on a hardy fabric, that is often all it takes.
If the stain has dried, or the dog has used the same spot more than once, the urine is almost certainly in the foam and possibly the frame. Surface cleaning at this point mostly makes things look worse: re-wetting dried urine releases the smell and can leave a brown ring as the moisture wicks out to the edge of the old stain. The odour needs to be treated where it actually is, with enough enzyme to reach the full depth, followed by strong extraction to pull the liquid and the broken-down residue back out.
Older dogs with incontinence are a special case. The kindest and most practical approach is a washable, waterproof throw or couch cover between cleans, so accidents never reach the cushion in the first place.
A few habits make a big difference: a waterproof-backed throw on the dog's favourite spot, a vet check if an adult dog suddenly starts having accidents, and fabric protection after a professional clean so the next spill can be blotted before it soaks in. Protection will not make a couch urine-proof, but it buys time.
If the smell keeps coming back, the urine has reached the foam, or it has happened more than once, a professional enzyme treatment with proper extraction is the reliable fix. We assess the couch on arrival, treat the padding at the source, and tell you honestly if a cushion insert is too far gone. Pet urine and odour treatment is from $40 on top of the published couch price, same day across most Adelaide suburbs.

Common questions
Dried dog urine has usually soaked into the foam, so surface cleaning rarely works and re-wetting can make the smell stronger for a while. It needs an enzyme treatment applied deep enough to reach the source, then strong extraction. That is hard to do at home without over-wetting the couch, which is why old stains are usually a job for a professional.
A small hire machine can help on a fresh accident on a hardy fabric, used with an enzyme pre-treatment. The risk is that consumer machines put down more water than they extract, which pushes urine deeper and leaves the cushion damp for days. Never use one on delicate fabrics like velvet, linen or bouclé.
Only if the urine in the foam was not fully treated. If the smell returns on a humid day, uric acid is still in the padding and needs an enzyme treatment that reaches it. Done properly, most couches stay fresh.
