Leather is not fabric, and cleaning it like fabric is exactly how people wreck an expensive lounge. Done right, a leather couch cleans up beautifully and lasts for decades. Here is what "right" looks like.

Quick answer
To clean a leather couch, vacuum the seams, wipe it with a barely damp microfibre cloth and a pH-balanced leather cleaner, dry it straight away, then apply a leather conditioner. Never use steam, baby wipes, vinegar, all-purpose sprays or alcohol, which strip the finish and dry the hide. Condition every 6–12 months. For ingrained grime on arms and headrests, a professional leather clean and condition in Adelaide starts from $140 for a 3-seater.
Leather is a natural material with a finish and natural oils that keep it supple. Blast it with steam or soak it with a wet fabric cleaner and you strip those oils, swell the hide, and set it up to dry out and crack — the opposite of cleaning it. That is why a leather lounge should never go anywhere near a steam machine, however good that machine is on fabric.
What leather actually collects is body oil, hand grime and general soil on the high-contact areas — the arms, the headrest, the seat you always sit in. Over the years those spots darken and the finish dulls, and without maintenance the leather slowly loses moisture and starts to crack.
Proper leather care is a two-step, low-moisture process. First, a gentle leather-specific clean lifts the surface grime and body oils without saturating the hide. Then — the step most people skip — a conditioning treatment puts moisture and flexibility back into the leather, which is what restores the sheen and, more importantly, stops it cracking in the spots that get the most use.
A light home version: wipe the leather with a barely-damp microfibre cloth for regular dust, avoid all-purpose sprays and "wipes" (many contain solvents or alcohol that degrade the finish), and use a proper leather conditioner a couple of times a year. That maintenance goes a long way. What home care cannot easily do is safely deep-clean ingrained grime or evenly restore a tired, dried-out suite — that needs the right products and a feel for how a particular hide will respond.
If the leather is aniline (soft, unprotected, darkens when you touch it with a damp finger), skip the DIY wet clean entirely and stick to dusting until it is professionally treated.
We clean leather lounges across Adelaide with a gentle hand clean and a conditioning treatment — no steam, no soaking — to lift grime and body oils and put suppleness back into the hide. It is a common job in the established inner-east and inner-north, where a lot of homes have a good leather suite that has been in the family for years and just needs bringing back rather than replacing. As with every job, the price is published and confirmed on inspection before we start.

Common questions
No — and you should not let anyone try. Steam and heavy moisture strip leather's natural oils and finish, swell the hide and lead to drying and cracking. Leather needs a gentle low-moisture clean followed by conditioning, which is a completely different process from cleaning fabric.
With a conditioning treatment after a gentle clean. Conditioning puts moisture and flexibility back into the hide, restoring the sheen and stopping cracking in high-use areas like the arms and seat. Deep cracks that have already split the finish cannot be fully reversed, so it is best done as maintenance before it gets that far.
Once a year is plenty for most homes, with light dusting in between. Regular conditioning is what extends a leather couch's life — removing ingrained oils and keeping the hide supple means a good leather suite can last decades rather than drying out and cracking early.
A pH-balanced cleaner made for leather, applied with a barely damp microfibre cloth, followed by a leather conditioner. Avoid baby wipes, vinegar, dish detergent and all-purpose sprays, which can strip the finish and dry the hide.
With Couch Rescue, a leather 3-seater is cleaned and conditioned from $140. Larger modulars and corner units are priced by size and confirmed on inspection before any work starts, with no hidden fees.
